June 10, 2020

Good news!  The Health Department has approved our Safety Plan to open the swimming pool for the season.  We are working through the final details and hope to be opening any day.  Please note that there will be occupancy restrictions, a reservation system and social distancing requirements.  Additionally, the baby pool is not permitted to open, and no seating will be provided (you are welcome to bring your own).  Board volunteers will be periodically disinfecting the common touch points and a monitor will be present in the afternoon hours to allow for increased occupancy over “un-monitored” hours.  We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience as we navigate these unprecedented times, and resident cooperation is imperative for the pool to remain open.  Please be on the lookout for official opening information in the coming days!

May 21, 2020

Hello everybody,

As the State of Missouri relaxes its rules regarding stay-at-home orders and essential businesses, some activities are starting back up that were previously suspended, people are going back to work, tensions are easing just a bit.  That is a welcome change that I think we all hope continues.

However, the orders have not relaxed completely and we are still nowhere near "normal."  The City still has quite stringent rules governing certain things like restaurants, hair salons... and swimming pools. Some folks may be going back to work, but when it comes to a pool the City says, "Not so fast."

We have been provided with a set of rules that must be followed in order to open the pool.  These include rigorous cleaning, testing, and monitoring (6 feet social distancing and # of people no more than 25)  of the pool multiple times a day.  Unfortunately, Vanderveen cannot afford the additional expenses that we would incur in order to comply with these rules, especially as we are still paying for repairs to the pool (and the tennis court) from last year, all while struggling to NOT increase dues.

Add to all of that the liability the Association might face if an outbreak of COVID-19 were traced back to our pool.  Our insurance does not cover bacterial nor viral outbreaks.  That could put the Association - all of you - at great financial risk if we were found at fault for opening the pool and causing an outbreak.

As such, the Board has concluded that it is simply not financially feasible for us to open the pool at this time.

We continue to monitor the news and announcements from the various authorities regarding shared spaces like the pool.  As new information becomes available, the Board will take it under consideration and will keep everyone informed. Our hope it that as the City progresses through the re-opening phases, restrictions may ease, allowing us to open the pool.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  My daughters are among those who would rather be at the pool than cooped up in the house with their boring parents.  If anything changes, we will be sure to let everyone know as soon as possible.

Stay safe everybody,

Justin McNutt, President

for the VCHA Board of Directors
